8 things to Do for Your First USC Game Day

There’s nothing quite like a Trojan game day. The energy, the traditions, and the sea of cardinal and gold make it one of the most memorable parts of the USC experience. If it’s your first time, here’s your complete guide to making the most of it:

1. Get Your Tickets - WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS
Secure your official student season pass here. It’s $275 for all 6 home games. It’s definitely pricey, but if you plan to go to all the games, this is definitely the best option. Students often resell tickets on verified social media groups like Instagram and Snapchat. NEVER buy a resale ticket from someone who isn’t a verified student. You should make sure you know the student’s information so that you can report them if they scam you.

2. Arrive Early
Game days at USC aren’t just about the kickoff; they’re an all-day event. Get to campus early to soak it all in. The quads and walkways will be filled with tailgates, student groups, alumni tents, and the official school-sponsored tailgate right in the middle of campus.

3. Tailgate like a Trojan
Tailgating is the heart of the experience. McCarthy Quad, Trousdale Parkway, and especially the North University Park neighborhood are packed with energy. Most tailgates will be set up there, giving you plenty of spots to walk through and enjoy.

Greek life brings a huge presence to game day. Nearly every fraternity on the Row hosts its own tailgate party starting a couple of hours before game time, and depending on the opponent, these can draw hundreds or even thousands of people. Between the music, food, and school spirit, these parties are some of the most fun gatherings that you’ll find on campus.

4. Heritage Hall & the Trojan Marching Band
If you’re interested in watching the marching band before the game, make your way to Heritage Hall. There, the Trojan Marching Band puts on a rally about two hours before kickoff. From there, the band marches down Trousdale Parkway toward the Coliseum, and fans often follow along. If you want the full experience, this is a great option.

5. Gear Up (and Bag Check Rules)
Stop by the USC Bookstore for Trojan gear shirts, polos, skirts, hats, or jerseys. Security is strict: only clear bags or small fanny packs are allowed inside.

Pack smart: sunscreen, an unopened water bottle (yes, you can bring one in), chapstick, sunglasses, and maybe a towel for the heat.

6. Beat the Heat
The Los Angeles sun doesn’t mess around. The temperature of afternoon games can reach triple digits. Stay hydrated, bring that unopened water bottle, and reapply sunscreen. Hats and sunglasses don’t just complete your outfit; they’ll save you from frying in the student section.

7. Beat the Heat
On game days, campus turns cardinal and gold. Students go all out with game day outfits, skirts, polos, jerseys, and accessories. It’s part of the fun (and the Instagram photos). Just balance style with comfort and sun protection. Pro tip: Wear a hat; the sun is not forgiving.

8. Getting to the Colliseum
The Coliseum sits right across the street from campus, making the transition from tailgate to game pretty simple, but if you’re starting from north of campus, this can be a 15+ minute walk. As you get closer to the Coliseum, foot traffic will start to pick up, so if you don’t like walking in big crowds, make sure to head over around an hour before gametime. The Student Section entrance is at Gate 28. Make sure to have your tickets out and ready to show to the staff. From there staff will direct you to the Student Section. If you want close seats, you’ll have to get there early. Usually, an hour ish before kickoff is good.

Final Tips

  • Make sure you secure your official tickets or buy resale from a REAL student.

  • Arrive early if you don’t like crowds or want good seats.

  • Bring sunscreen, water, and a clear bag to avoid headaches at the gate.

  • Wear Trojan colors!

  • Stay hydrated, especially during early-season day games.

USC game day is a tradition, a celebration, and a unifying experience for students and alumni alike. Whether you’re there for the football, the tailgates, or just the atmosphere, one thing’s certain: your first game day will be a memory you won’t forget.
